Introduced in 1950, the 356 model was the genesis of the Porsche brand. Created by Ferdinand "Ferry" Porsche, the namesake son of the company's founder Ferdinand Porsche, the 356 proved the idea of a rear-engine, lite-weight sports car that was fun to drive and easy to operate. This same ethos later spawned the 356's replacement, the Porsche 911, that is still in production to this day. The 356 utilized an air cooled horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine that was mounted to the rear of a unitized chassis pan. The suspension components, fuel tank, and seats were also bolted to this pan, and then the curvaceous steel body was lowered down onto the completed chassis pan. This construction method, and some mechanical components, were shared with Volkswagen at the time. This was as a result of Ferdinand Porsche's involvement in engineering for Volkswagen during the war, and the lack of manufacturing available in Germany directly thereafter. However, with the Porsche, the engine was more powerful, the body much lighter, and the ergonomics much more refined. This made the 356 a multi-use sports car that could be raced or toured with equal success.
