The year 1962 was the swan song year for the first generation of Chevrolet's iconic Corvette. From its auspicious genesis in 1953, the Corvette legend grew and developed through racing exploits, improved performance capabilities, and attractive styling changes each year. New for 62', and a portent of things to come in the next generation, was the introduction of the 327CI small block V-8. This new engine was an enlargement of the 283CI brought about by increasing the cylinder bore 1/8th of an inch to 4in where it remained a constant through the end of the small block Chevrolet engine architecture in 1996. The 327CI engine was available in four different configurations ranging from the easy to drive 250HP, hydraulic lifter, small cam cruiser to a fuel injected, solid lifter, 360HP bruiser. The sweet spot in the range, as sales numbers would prove, was RPO 396. This 327CI V-8 was rated at 340HP, making it the most powerful carbureted V8 engine ever installed in a Corvette to that day. As installed in the 62' Corvette you see on offer here, this powerhouse was a $107.60 option, making it an absolute bargain compared to the fuel injected engine option that offered only twenty more horsepower at a cost of $484.20. Built on March 14, 1962, this classic Corvette still retains it's original engine and four speed T-10 manual transmission. Ordered in Roman red over red interior, with white vinyl soft top, matching Roman Red fiberglass hard top, and whitewall tires, this Corvette was and is a real head turner. This beautiful example of America's sports car has been lovingly cared for and sparingly driven throughout it's life, accruing only 88,000 miles over a span of 61 years in the wild. The chrome and glass show the patina of the years as appropriate for a car of this age and originality. The paint is single stage lacquer and is believed to be original by the consignor. It shows small scratches and chips congruent with sixty plus years of road use. The engine was rebuilt to factory fresh conditions by West Coast Corvette in California and has done approximately 8,000 miles hence. This Corvette starts with ease, does not smoke, and drives as nicely as any 62' Corvette could ever aspire to. The clutch was replaced when the engine was rebuilt, and the shift lever slides from gear to gear with just a flick of the wrist. Inside this Corvette is very original, with only a few minor alterations. The seat center sections have been replaced, and an aftermarket AM/FM/Cassette stereo has been installed. All the gauges, lights, and wipers work as they should, and this car is ready for a tour at a moment's notice. Having been in the consignor's ownership since 1982, this Corvette has been garage kept in California until coming to Florida recently. This beautiful and original Corvette is a dream come true for the enthusiast looking for a first-generation Corvette that is unmodified and can be driven and enjoyed as Zora Arkus Duntov intended.
