The Buick Grand National was a true throwback to the plush muscle cars of Buick's past. These banker's hot rods were at once both powerful and luxurious, something that couldn't be said of the other American made pony cars of the times. Buick chose to go the turbo route to make more power from its renowned 3.8L pushrod V6. In the base Regal the naturally aspirated 3.8L made 110 horsepower and 190lb. ft of torque. Hardly a performance car by any stretch of the imagination. For the Grand National, Buick's engineers added a small turbocharger, intercooler, bigger injectors, and with some tuning wizardry the lil' six that could was suddenly making 245 horsepower and 355 lb. ft. of torque. The Grand National was the epitome of "walk softly but carry a big stick", as the exhaust was almost silent, and the power came on suddenly and the Buick took off with a whoosh from under the hood. The looks needed to match the power, so Buick chose to cloak the Grand National all in black making it appear to be Darth Vader's daily driver. Inside the GN came with all the creature comforts of the day and lots of room to stretch out on a long drive. Power windows, power locks, cruise control, automatic transmission, AM/FM/Cassette stereo, digital gages, rear defroster, and A/C were all standard equipment. These bad boy turbo Buicks struck fear into the hearts of anyone driving a Z28, Trans Am, or Mustang GT in its day.
The 87' Grand National pictured here for sale is a pristine, low mile example of the last year of GN production. This GN is wearing a set of black GNX style wheels that take the sinister appearance to a different level. The mechanicals have been improved with HD valve springs, rocker shaft braces, and fuel pump feeder kit from Kirban Performance Products. A TurboTweak custom ECM computer chip has been installed, aftermarket Borla exhaust, and a Scanmaster 2.1 AFR gauge to keep an eye on things has also been fitted. These small tweaks give this GN a performance boost and make for a strong running and comfortable performance automobile. The original window sticker, build sheet, owner's manual, and a clean CarFax are included with the sale, plus original parts that were removed.
