The year 2008 marked the 40th anniversary of the original Ford/Shelby Mustang GT500KR, and Ford found itself prime to replicate that historic achievement with a modern GT500KR based off the new S-197 generation Mustang. While the standard GT500 had already been back in production for over a year, the GT500KR would be a one year only, low production homage to the Shelby name. Ford didn't just add a few horsepower and call it a day, the Special Vehicles Team upgraded almost every part of the suspension and driveline. Under the hood, the 5.4L supercharged V-8 was upgraded to 540hp and 510lb. ft. of torque through aggressive engine timing, a new H-pipe in place of the standard X-pipe, and removal of the exhaust mufflers and replacing them with resonators and baffled tips. The hood of this special Shelby was made up of over 100 different pieces of carbon fiber and is over 15 pounds lighter than the GT500's aluminum hood. Not just an aesthetics piece, this carbon fiber hood pulls in cold outside air and ducts it through the hood to the sealed air intake box with performance filter. Exhaust ducts built into the hood release under hood heat and relieve air pressure at high speeds. The transmission is upgraded with a shorter throw shifter, and power is fed back to a solid axle rear end with 3.73:1 gears and limited slip. On the chassis side of things, tuning is about 17-percent stiffer in front and about seven-percent stiffer in the rear than the GT500's, via more aggressive Ford Racing springs and Tokico shocks and struts. The ABS and traction-control system were recalibrated, the latter cutting in later to allow more oversteer (and fun) before stepping in. Ride height drops 20 mm up front and 15 in the back. No changes to the braking system were required; the 14-inch front Brembos and vented rear discs were judged adequate to cover the increased performance. There's more negative camber and zero toe, in the name of sharper steering. The rolling stock consists of handsome, forged Alcoa alloys wrapped by sticker Goodyear F1s compounded specifically for the KR. All these improvements add up to a 0-60 time of 4.3 seconds, a quarter mile time of 12.1 seconds, and a steady state 1G cornering ability.
The GT500KR you see here is an exceedingly clean, 1-owner, low mile unmodified example. The gloss black paint with flat black stripes and chrome wheels makes for a truly understated and sophisticated appearing performance automobile. You might be able to slide past a few of law enforcements finest in this bad boy without calling attention to yourself, well, unless you're on the loud pedal. To say this is a fun to drive automobile would be the understatement of the year. It is something to be truly desired. Contact Brian at 352-307-1968 and take this thoroughbred pony car home today!!
